"Kids love the recommended videos in the app - and parents have told us they are also interested in more ways to personalize the app for their specific style", said YouTube Kids' product director James Beser in a statement.

How it works is that YouTube makes use of machine learning to flag and remove videos. The New York Times reported in the fall that children using the app had been shown videos with popular characters from Nick Jr. and Disney Junior in violent or lewd situations, and other disturbing imagery, sometimes set to nursery rhymes.

Parent need to go into "Profile" settings, and select from available collections such as Sesame Workshop and PBS KIDS.

Facebook explains why it bans some content, publishes internal enforcement guidelines
Facebook has recently been grappling with backlash for how it handled the data breach scandal involving Cambridge Analytica. The guidelines apply to every country in which Facebook operates, and have been translated into more than 40 languages.

YouTube is under huge pressure to stay on top of inappropriate content, with the company being criticised for carrying videos promoting terrorism and child abuse. Previously recommendations could include content from any video or channel that is accessible through the YouTube Kids app, not just those verified by Google's team.

YouTube notes that parents who do not want access to the new features will be able to keep the current version of YouTube Kids.

Launched three years ago, YouTube Kids this week is adding video collections from "trusted partners" and the YouTube Kids team.

"For those parents who want even more control over the videos and channels in the YouTube Kids app, a special feature later this year will roll-out, that will allow parents to specifically handpick every video and channel available to their child in the app", YouTube Kids said. A human doesn't check the videos before they're added, but parents can flag videos they find alarming later and a content reviewer will check it out. It may be labourious, but with this new feature you'll be able to lock down what the kids are watching to only what you have pre-approved. "And, as always, we encourage parents to block and flag videos for review that they don't think should be in the YouTube Kids app", the company said in a blog post announcing the new features. But parents have discovered a range of inappropriate videos on the app, highlighting the platform's dependence on automation and a lack of human oversight.

The new feature gives new choices to parents to further customize YouTube Kids app.
