Al-Samad, who held the post of president in the Houthi-backed political body, was the most senior official to be killed by the Western-backed alliance, which had offered a $20-million U.S. reward for any information that led to Samad's capture.

The Houthi movement said it launched eight ballistic missiles toward the southern Saudi province of Jizan on Saturday, at what it called "economic and vital targets". A total of 38 Houthis lost their lives in the strike, which targeted the Interior Ministry building in Sanaa, Al Arabiya TV. reported.

The rebels will hold a public funeral for Sammad in Sanaa on 28 April.

Top officials in the Houthi government attended the funeral proceedings, including Mahdi al-Mashat, who was appointed to replace al-Samad.

According to an Al Arabiya news channel correspondent, Saudi air defense forces intercepted and destroyed the missile using their Patriot defense system around 12:50 pm local time. Houthi leader Abdul-Malek al-Houthi vowed to avenge al-Samad's death.

"Hamid Ahmed Younis Al-Kareidi, Ali Dahan Farhan Al-'Abdi, and Ismail Yahya Al-Gharbani were killed during clashes between the Yemeni Army and Iranian backed Houthi militias, said a Yemeni field source".

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched the war in March 2015 in support of Yemen's former Riyadh-friendly government and against the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which is now running state affairs.

The Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, have previously fired missiles targeting the Saudi mainland, including the capital, Riyadh.
