  • Attorney General Jeff Sessions speaking at the National Association of Attorneys General Winter Meeting in Washington

Sessions acknowledged that if an immigrant is accompanied by a child "that child will be separated from you as required by law".

Those who enter the US illegally will not be detained and returned over the border; anyone who crosses into the country illegally can expect to be held for prosecution, the LA Times reported. He denied that that Trump administration has a "blanket policy" to separate families as a way to deter others from trying.

It corresponds with a Department of Justice "zero-tolerance policy" for illegal border crossings, under which Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered federal prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against all referrals for illegally crossing the border, as possible.

In prepared remarks released to the media at an event in Arizona on Monday, Sessions said the government would also go after immigrants who pay smugglers to bring children across the border.

He says cases will include people who allegedly smuggle children across the border or who lie to immigration officers.

The Trump administration has chose to refer every person caught crossing the border illegally for federal prosecution, a policy that could result in the separation of far more parents from their children at the border.

In a news conference Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the separation is due to the legal process, adding that citizens in the USA are also separated from their families when they're arrested.

The remarks were published on the department's website as Sessions prepares to hold a news conference in San Diego with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan.
