The girl, who was on a motorbike with two bombers, was thrown clear and survived.

Police said they uncovered the link between the three families through interviews with the surviving children of the Sidoarjo family.

Police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said six civilians and four police officers were wounded in the explosion at the police complex in Surabaya.

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo condemned the attacks as "barbaric" and vowed that authorities would root out and destroy Islamic militant networks.

Earlier, police said his family was among 500 Islamic State sympathizers who had returned from Syria, but the police chief said that was incorrect.

He said the imprisonment of JAD's leader, Aman Abdurrahman, could be another motive, and cited clashes with Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week in which five counter-terrorism officers were killed.

"As one recent study carefully noted, Indonesians aren't lured into joining ISIS simply because of its ideology or propaganda", he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility after the latest suicide bombing.

Church communities have called for action against those responsible for the recent attacks.

Police identified the father as 48-year-old Dita Oepiarto and his wife as 43-year-old Puji Kuswati.

The father of the church suicide bombers was a local leader in extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which supports the Islamic State group, and the second family was also linked to JAD.

The father of a family of 5 that attacked police headquarters in the same city on Monday is also believed to have belonged to the group.

At least 26 people were killed and dozens more injured in the multiple suicide bombings, the deadliest terrorist strike in Indonesia in more than a decade.

Police have raided several locations and found more bombs.

"What happened is their parents indoctrinated the children", said Arifin, "So when the mother asked them to wear the waist bombs they did it".

The sons aged 16 and 18 rode a motorcycle onto the grounds of the Santa Maria Church and detonated their explosives there, he said.

Police said they killed four suspected members of JAD in Cianjur, West Java Province, and arrested two others, the BBC reported.

Police also increased security in nearly all major churches in big cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan.

Indonesia is no stranger to terror attacks, including bombings on Bali in 2002 and 2003 as well as on worldwide hotels in Jakarta in 2003 and 2009.

"We've also seen children involved in executing political prisoners, and there's always been an appetite in Islamic State to use women and children". Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaida affiliated network responsible for the Bali attacks, was obliterated by a sustained crackdown on militants by Indonesia's counterterrorism police with U.S. and Australian support.
