Threat of heavy rains, flooding as storm makes landfall

  • Florida and Mississippi are under states of emergency ahead Subtropical Storm Alberto

It is going to be a week of wet and unsettled weather as Tropical Storm Alberto moves across Tennessee, bringing plenty of gulf moisture and heavy rainfall amounts to Tennessee. Turned out the heaviest rain today was along and west of the center, on the "good" side with a north flow.

Alberto is the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season and is only the ninth named storm on record to make landfall in the USA prior to June 1, widely regarded as the beginning of hurricane season.

In Cuba, flooding damaged an oil refinery and caused crude oil to spill into Cienfuegos Bay as the remnants of Alberto continued to drench the island in heavy rain.

Trying To Find Immediate Solution For Fuel Prices: Dharmendra Pradhan
BJP president Amit Shah had last week said that a solution to rein in sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices would be found soon. The rises are due to the price of oil increasing to more than 80 United States dollars, combined with a weakening of the pound.

State-owned TV showed authorities using barriers Tuesday to try to contain the spill from the Cienfuegos refinery in central Cuba about 150 miles southeast of Havana.

Forecasters had feared the storm could bring unsafe high water to southern coastal states and possible tornadoes. It will still be important to stay aware of where those bands of rain are and with such a soggy ground, even slight wind gusts could still impact trees or power lines.

It left 6,540 customers in Florida without power, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management. And while forecasters said the subtropical depression could dump several inches (centimeters) of rain inland, few major problems have been reported so far.

Oil prices drop on expectations OPEC could boost output
The premium of Brent crude over US West Texas Intermediate futures neared $8 a barrel, close to its widest in three years. That was a surprise increase compared with the 2 million-barrel decline predicted in a Bloomberg survey.

Subtropical storm Alberto rolled ashore Monday afternoon in the Florida Panhandle and then weakened overnight to a depression.

Forecasters said that rain could still kill people caught in flash floods in the coming hours or days in Alabama and large areas of Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

The NHC warned it would still deliver heavy, potentially damaging rains of 2 to 6 inches (6 cm to 15 cm), with chances of 12 inches (30 cm) in some spots in north Florida and Alabama through Tuesday night, possibly spurring flooding.

Abortion referendum decision 'tragedy of historic proportions'
Most polls will open at 0600 GMT on Friday , although voting was already under way on Thursday on remote west coast islands. He added that the outcome proves that Ireland "trusts and respects women to make their own decision and choices".

On Monday, two people - news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer of the Greenville, South Carolina-based CNN affiliate WYFF - were killed in Polk County, North Carolina.
