In regards to his abrupt cancellation of the summit last week, Trump said "we're over that, we're totally over that".
Early Thursday, Trump told reporters "we are doing very well" with North Korea.
"That letter was a very nice letter", Trump said to reporters. Meanwhile, discussions between USA and North Korean officials continue in Singapore and in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.
United States officials with knowledge of the letter's contents said it did not make any noteworthy threats or concessions, and was seen as a positive step, according to multiple newsreports.
Trump said that, after Friday's talks, the parties are "totally over that and now we're going to deal and we're going to really start a process".
Trump said one possible outcome of the summit might be an end to the Korean War. But Trump also promised he would ensure security for both Kim and the North Korean regime if he does close down his nuclear weapons program.
Later Friday, deputy White House press secretary Hogan Gidley confirmed that Trump had read the letter, but he did not reveal its contents.
