His many opponents finally caught up with Mariano Rajoy on Friday when a leftist coalition ousted the Spanish Prime Minister's center-right government with a no-confidence vote in parliament. But he faces a tough road ahead, leading a minority government made up of diverse parties ranging from far-left Podemos to Catalan separatists.

The Basque Nationalist Party, whose five seats were key to Sanchez securing enough parliamentary backing, withdrew support from Rajoy after dozens of people linked to his centre-right People's Party (PP) were sentenced to decades in jail in a corruption trial.

Sanchez said Thursday that one of the priorities of his government would be "rebuilding bridges" with the country's regions and "establishing the foundations that allow us to normalize relations and start a dialogue between the Spanish government and the new government in Catalonia".

Torra said "Pedro Sanchez, let us talk, take risks, both you and I, let us sit down at a table and talk, government to government".

His ousting of EU-friendly Rajoy, a 63-year-old veteran politician who had been in power since 2011, comes at a time of political instability in Europe as Italy brings in a new eurosceptic anti-establishment government.

His arrival at the prime minister's office crowns an astounding comeback. The two political rivals then posed for a photo with the monarch.
