Amazon to livestream Premier League in online shakeup

The e-commerce giant will show two full rounds of 20 soccer matches per season, starting in 2019 in a three-year deal. The rights packages include a total of 200 of the league's 380 games, up from the current deal of 168.

BT Sport dropped £90million to add the final remaining 20-game package to their collection, meaning that overall they will be shelling out £975million to broadcast 52 live matches per season for three years.

Amazon's Jay Marine said Prime members in Britain would be able to watch every team and every game in the two rounds of fixtures, "so no matter which Premier League team you support, you're guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video". The Verge notes that BT and Sky are paying the equivalent of about $12.5 million per game.

Amazon will make the Premier League available to Amazon Prime members.

He beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet in straight sets (6-3, 6-2, 6-2) to claim his place in the Roland Garros Round-of-sixteen. He beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (4), ending fading French hopes as the evening sun dimmed on Court No. 18.

Sky, which has broadcast Premier League games since its inception in 1992, still holds the majority of packages of live-TV fixtures that are valued at £4.55bn.

Now, some four months on and following extended negotiations, a deal has been struck with the Amazon and BT Sport.

If prices remain as they are, it seems that the cheapest monthly cost of Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime Video packages that cover all the live games will set you back £66.48 a month.

The Premier League has concluded the sales process for all its live broadcasting rights in the United Kingdom and Ireland for the three seasons 2019/20 to 2021/22.

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore described Amazon as an "exciting new partner". It also adds to Amazon's growing list of sports rights in Britain, which include US Open tennis.

BT's deal means that BT Sport will, for the first time, show multiple mid-week Premier League matches on the same evening.

On a busy day of announcements at the Premier League's summer meeting, it was also confirmed that the "big six" clubs have won their fight to take a bigger share of the top tier's booming worldwide broadcasting revenue.

The Amazon deal is good news for the EPL, which will welcome competition after the value of its main rights packages fell this time.

Before Neymar's brilliant opener, Croatia might have struck first when Ante Rebic's header forced a fine save from Alisson. The Brazilian injured the same foot playing for Paris Saint-Germain and underwent surgery in Brazil in early March.

No doubt the organisation are excited about tapping into a network of 100 million Prime members worldwide - over ten times the number of subscribers to Sky, who have been experiencing falling viewership in their sports packages in recent years.
