Ryan said Gowdy's "initial assessment is accurate" and he's seen no evidence to the contrary.

Gaetz said replacing Ryan before he retires "remains a lingering question and you're starting to see more frustrations bubble to the top because we need that leadership".

A senior Justice Department official said the briefing will allow lawmakers "to review certain supporting documents that were made available during the prior briefing". "As Chairman Nunes said the other day, if we had the information we could wrap this up faster", he said about the California Republican, a staunch Trump loyalist who worked on his transition.

Ryan also backed up another senior Republican's assertion that there is no evidence that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted a "spy" in Trump's 2016 presidential election campaign when it sent a secret informant to investigate signs of potentially improper links with high level Russian operatives.

There have already been rumblings about ousting Ryan as speaker before the end of his term, and on Wednesday conservatives incensed by Ryan's Spygate rejection pushed the discussion into the open.

Initially, the Justice Department resisted providing Congress with the materials, fearing the source's life would be placed at risk, but it later chose to provide members with classified briefings to answer questions.

In his latest salvo on the Russian Federation probe, Trump's lawyer - former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani - said Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller's team is trying to frame Trump, the Associated Press reported.

The Justice Department on Thursday offered lawmakers an additional classified briefing about the FBI's use of a confidential informant during its investigation into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Ryan issued a careful warning about the idea of Trump pardoning himself.

President Trump has said the FBI's alleged surveillance campaign was "bigger than Watergate", and the Department of Justice has formally requested a review of the surveillance application process used by the FBI to determine "whether there was any impropriety or political motivation in how the FBI conducted its counterintelligence investigation".

Giuliani says Mueller's investigators trying to frame Trump
The letter did not explicitly describe the possibility of Mr Trump pardoning himself. He is also looking into whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation.

"I run in the more conservative circles in the house, and I have never up until this point heard a single person talk about removing speaker Ryan from the speakership", Gaetz said.

Hours after Ryan's comments, Burr told The Associated Press that he, too, agreed with Gowdy.

Ryan also warned President Trump not to pardon himself, as a debate rages on over the president's constitutional powers. Moderates are attempting to force a vote on several immigration bills, including one that would protect young undocumented immigrants from deportation in exchange for border security funding.

"I don't know how you can reach that conclusion based on the history of the FBI", Jordan told The Hill.
