  • Closing North Korea's vast nuclear program poses challenges

Flamboyant former United States basketball star Dennis Rodman has said he will fly to Singapore to support his "friends" Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un at their historic peace summit on Tuesday.

More than 1,000 people paid for a photo with the Kim-Trump lookalikes over the weekend.

From Pyongyang, the North's official media Monday carried comparatively detailed reports on leader Kim Jong-un's visit to Singapore, including his arrival date and plan to hold his first meeting with Trump on Tuesday. "This is a very major operation because it's a high-profile meeting and we can not afford to have anything go wrong", he added.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the US ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting. Now North Korean officials will nearly certainly emphasise preventing any sudden mishaps in Kim Jong Un's first visit to a foreign country other than China or South Korea since taking power, said Kim Doo-hyun, professor of protection politics at Korea National Sport University.

"Like any middle power, Kim is aiming to be independent of any great power - both China and America - and he is already a fair way towards that goal", Mr.

Trump dangles prospect of North Korean leader visit if summit successful
Leading the American efforts in negotiating with the North Koreans, he said the United States is making progress, inch by inch. Trump continues to follow every development closely and is getting daily briefings from his national security team, he said.

Mr. Trump made the remarks after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss the June 12 summit. "It's North Korea", said one western tourist with a shrug.

Conservative groups have also held demonstrations, urging the US not to compromise with the repressive Kim government that has broken previous denuclearization promises. A US official cited by Bloomberg predicted the meeting will go into the evening and potentially end with a joint resolution.

The two men will be joined later by their closest aides, including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton, the official said.

Their meeting, which will be held at the city-state's Capella Hotel, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.

He met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to thank him for hosting the summit, adding: "If the summit becomes a success, the Singaporean efforts will go down in history".

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers have played about as well as they can in this year's NBA Finals . They came out of halftime on an 11-3 run and outscored the Cavaliers in the quarter, 31-23.

South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured.

Denuclearization of North Korea is the headline topic at Tuesday's summit between Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, but for North Korean officials travelling to Singapore, their top priority is much narrower: protecting their leader. Some experts, including CBS News' Bob Carlin, have said it could take as long as 15 years for North Korea to completely wind down its nuclear and missile program, which is estimated to include enough material for 25 to 30 nuclear weapons.

Since then, the path to the summit has been rocky, with Mr Trump at one point calling it off completely. The high-anticipated talks had been put at risk, when, on May 24, Trump announced he was canceling the meeting with Kim over Pyongyang's hostile rhetoric.

Asked by a reporter how he is feeling about the summit, Trump said: "Very good".

The North invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw US-led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang's forces which were aided by Russian Federation and China, before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula.
