SINGAPORE (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged on Tuesday to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula while Washington committed to provide security guarantees for its old enemy. He gave no further details.
Trump seemingly played down the importance of the exercises during a news conference after his summit in Singapore with the North Korean leader, in which Kim broadly agreed to end his nuclear weapons program without providing virtually any specifics on how he would do so.
"The fact that we have been chosen as the site of the meeting... says something about Singapore's relations with the parties - with America, with North Korea - (and) also our standing in the worldwide community", said Lee.
"I think the entire world is watching this moment". It will be tremendously successful. "I have no doubt".
Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the US was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".
But the interpreter has some experience of Trump already, having served in talks between Kim's right-hand man Kim Yong-chol and Trump at the White House recently.
Wang also expressed hope that Trump and Kim would "overcome difficulties and [be] able to reach basic consensus on the denuclearization of the peninsula".
Media photos showed South Korean President Moon Jae-in smiling broadly during a Cabinet meeting at the Blue House while watching a television screen that showed Trump and Kim shaking hands in front of American and North Korean flags.
The talks - unimaginable just a few months ago - will focus on North Korea's controversial nuclear programme.
But while Trump, and Kim, regularly stray off diplomatic scripts, a larger risk may be that there may be no full transcript, public or secret, of what the two leaders discussed.
Shortly before the summit began, Mr Trump tweeted that his top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, had suffered a heart attack and was in hospital.
